Lord Rayleigh succeeded James Clerk Maxwell (1831 – 1879) to serve as the second Cavendish Professor of Physics at the University of Cambridge. He held the Chair from 1879 to 1884. Ernest Rutherford (1871 – 1937), the 4th Chair, held the position from 1918 until his death in 1937.
With an endowment granted by William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire (1808 – 1891), Maxwell founded Cavendish Laboratory in 1871. The physics laboratory was named after Henry Cavendish (1731 – 1810). Henry made the first scientific discovery of atomic element hydrogen and precisely calculated the mass of Earth.
In 1772 Daniel Rutherford (1749 – 1819) reported his discovery of nitrogen.
